Bodhicitta: A Gentle Path that Fosters Growth

Bodhicitta: A Gentle Path that Fosters Growth

By Swami Omkari Devananda, Shoshoni Yoga Retreat, Rollinsville, CO

“We begin this journey with a good heart, with the intention to benefit all sentient beings. This is the first and most important step on the journey. But bodhichitta is not cultivated only at the beginning; it is cultivated and actually becomes stronger at every step of the journey. This is how the bodhisattva Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha.” – Venerable Khenpo Rinpoches

When life feels chaotic, whether it’s due to global crises or personal struggles, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or shut down. But there’s a beautiful teaching in the Buddhist tradition called bodhicitta that offers a gentle yet powerful way through it all. Rather than running from the messiness or trying to fix everything right away, bodhicitta invites us to soften, to open our hearts right in the middle of it all.

Chaos, whether it’s social upheaval, climate anxiety, heartbreak, or just everyday stress, can stir up fear and confusion. It’s natural to want to protect ourselves. But bodhicitta flips that instinct. Instead of closing off, it encourages us to stay present with compassion for ourselves and for others. It’s not about being a hero or a martyr. It’s simply about showing up with kindness and courage in a world that needs both.

In this light, chaos isn’t something to escape, it becomes part of the path. The difficulties we face aren’t distractions from spiritual growth; they become fuel for growth. Babaji often remind us, when we meet difficulties with an open heart, we tap into something deep and powerful which is our capacity to cultivate love, loving compassion, and to become wiser.

This doesn’t mean we sit back and accept injustice or suffering passively. It means we let our actions be rooted in the intention to help, not just react out of fear or anger. Bodhicitta becomes like a compass, gently guiding us and reminding us that we’re all in this together.

At its core, bodhicitta – cultivating love, compassion, joy and equinity — shifts our journey from being just about us to being about all of us. It’s a path of compassion that includes everyone just as we are.
