The work study program is designed for those wishing to delve deeply into a spiritual practice. Students participate in the yogic lifestyle, living in a community with other resident yogis.

Ashram residents’ main practice is Seva, or selfless service.  Seva is considered “Karma Yoga” or the Yoga of action.  Throughout the day students participate in different Seva projects designed to maintain the ashram facility and offer a welcoming and nourishing environment for our guests.  Different Seva projects may include cleaning, assisting with cooking, chopping wood/grounds maintenance, or computer/office work.

During this time students are encouraged to practice Japa, or mantra repetition, to develop a conscious awareness and presence of mind. Work-study participants take our morning Pranayama and Hatha Yoga Classes once a week.

Shambhava meditation offers a variety of practices for many types of seekers. Mantra repetition and breath awareness are main practices.  Our living teacher, His Holiness Rishi Maha Mandaleshwar Sri Shambhavananda, is a master of Kundalini meditation.  This practice brings attention to the breath and the movement and awareness of spiritual energy in the body.

"When you serve something greater than your own needs you find tremendous joy.  People such as Mother Teresa, people who have given themselves to something greater than themselves, always radiate with this happiness.  On a material level they don't have much. . . but they have an inner joy and an inner radiance.  They have discovered something."
-Sri Shambhavananda

    What is Seva?

"The people at Shoshoni dedicate their time and energy to sustaining a very special place. This is real seva. Even cutting firewood to keep the buildings warm is tremendous service. Shoshoni has been a place of refuge and spiritual growth for thousands of people.
To be a part of sustaining something like that is very very good work. It doesn't matter if you are cutting wood or carrying water or doing construction. You share in the service that we give to everyone who comes there. It is not just the teachers. It is the dishwashers, it is the cooks, it is the construction guys. You all make it happen. It is a very selfless thing. It is very good karma.

We all have a part to play in creating this very special place. You all should feel good about the time that you spent there, even if you are not there anymore. I am so grateful for each and everyone of you who over the years have been a part of this situation. I feel such a depth of connection with you. I've lived with you, worked with you, shared my life with you. It is a wonderful thing. This is what makes the sangha so strong. And such a resource for everybody who comes. Being a part of something bigger than just your own needs is the basis for real spiritual growth."
